Why Umbreon VMAX Alt Art Is Still the King

May 1, 2026

The Card That Changed Everything

When Evolving Skies dropped in August 2021, collectors were already buzzing. The set had an unprecedented density of Eeveelution alt arts — but nobody predicted that Umbreon VMAX #215/203 would become the most iconic modern Pokemon card.

What Makes Alt Art Cards Special

Alt art cards break from the standard template. Instead of showing the Pokémon in an arena-style background, they depict scenes:

  • Umbreon standing on moonlit rooftops
  • Full-art illustration that bleeds to every edge
  • Zero white border — pure immersive art

This was a turning point in Pokemon card design, and collectors noticed immediately.

The Numbers

At launch, Umbreon VMAX Alt Art was pulling around $200-250. By early 2022 it had crossed $400. Today, near-mint copies regularly sell above $300 on the secondary market.

Compare that to most chase cards from the same era, which have declined in value. Umbreon has held.

Is It Still a Buy?

Our take: yes, with caveats.

The card has a cultural moat. Umbreon is perpetually popular, the alt art format is now an established prestige tier, and this was the card that started that trend. That's durable.

The caveat: liquidity. Selling quickly means accepting a discount. If you're buying as an investment, buy graded (PSA 10 ideally) and plan to hold 3-5 years.
